Testing the WordPress Blackberry App

Testing testing.
Have to say that this app needs a hell of a lot of work. It just is nowhere near ready for prime time. Probably not even ready for alpha testing. Maybe that’s just my assessment, however. I can accept that it might work better for others. It is basically unusable on the BB Storm.

What's holding me down?

A quick bit of back story. As my very good friend, Joseph, and I continue developing the parameters of our latest joint effort, and doing it in and around our full time income producing activities, we try our best to communicate regularly. Usually we use IM chat and the occasional voice conversation (provided the correct combination of doors and windows are open and closed at Joseph’s AT&T challenged enhanced house 😉 ) Needing some personal, relationship insight, I had queried Joseph to get his take on a potential scenario that might be working its way into my life. Little did I think today I would be writing this post sharing with you what I believe is keeping me from finding success in my life.
Our chat was indeed insightful for me. Many of our communications are just that. During the course of it, I came to the determination that I just might need to make some radical changes in certain aspects of my life in order to take advantage of these potential scenarios.
And we talked about those changes.
When we were winding down, actually coming back around to our project discussion, Joseph decided to throw down one of his rare, but not out of the ordinary challenges to me. He asked me what was it that was “holding me down?” Why was it that I wasn’t doing what I wanted, where I wanted, and surrounding myself with whom I wanted?
Usually pretty quick with the thumb typing on the Storm, I found my response mechanism was completely stalled. As I pondered just how I might answer him, I decided this was something that needed a bit more introspection. So, like any smart blogger, I told him that I would think on things over night and post my answer to him today. This post, then, is that response.

What’s holding me down?

Or more specifically, why am I right where I am at this point in my life? Perhaps you can relate? Initially, I thought of external influences that I might be able to push the blame onto. Jobs that have gone away; others which have not arrived. Business ventures that have either failed after starting, or failed to start. Waiting to move forward because of the prospect of a great deal possibly coming my way. It’s not arrived yet, but it just might. And I couldn’t possibly take advantage of it if I was involved in something else, or working a “real job”, etc.
What those excuses really said to me was that I was using them all as excuses. It’s true. Perhaps you know someone like this as well? Perhaps you know them intimately? Perhaps, like me, this person is yourself?
So, those extremely well thought out and convincing excuses are now out of the way. I’ve accepted that they are not what’s holding me down. What then, am I willing to admit to, has been preventing me from moving into the person I believe I want to become?
It’s too easy to simply say, “It’s me. I’m holding myself down.” Of course this is the case. This is almost always the case with just about all of us. This answer really doesn’t provide us with much clarity though. Does it? What is it about the choices I’ve made and continue to make that keeps me from moving forward?
I may be too smart for my own britches. And I don’t share that statement in an arrogant or egotistical way. In fact, its phrasing may not be entirely correct. Better: I may be to curious about too many things for my own good. Yes, that more accurately describes how I feel.
Like so many of us, curiosity about a subject prompts me with the desire to learn more. One of my strengths (or so I like to believe) is that I learn very well. And usually quite fast. This is how I’ve become relatively adept at web development over the years. Unfortunately, that curiosity usually wanes before I am able to truly master a specific subject. I know a heck of a lot about a ton of things. But without the mastery, I really don’t have the confidence to consider a career path in pursuit of a specific area.
Even now, some of my current areas of interest and passion have me wondering whether or not I’m just in the exciting phase of the topics, and before long, the desires will fade. Then I’ll be left where I started; some interesting experiences, a bit more specialized knowledge and no long term growth and advancement.
Does this mean I am lazy? Maybe so. I know that even when I have the intellectual interest, as time moves forward the physical desires to progress towards a series of goals usually gives way to watching television, reading a book, or discovering some amazing new interest and proceeding to start the process all over again.
Some real world responsibilities may also contribute to what is holding me down. Joseph even commented on it (albeit, somewhat unrelated) that I might be too considerate of others. I am conscious of my current liabilities and the responsibilities I have to family. Fortunately, I tend to live on the frugal side of what I earn, so while the income levels are a bit below where I’d like them, I don’t stress too much about them. For now.
But there are those that count on my financial participation in order to make their lives work. If I decide to make changes, some of which could lead me to relocation, how will those dependencies be affected? (Bearing in mind that I am a single man, without direct dependents.) I think on these things. Often. My thoughts usually tend to result in a general malaise of feelings that defaults to the status quo. Translated: I am kept down by them.
Have I become unwilling and unmotivated to take chances and be spontaneous? Is this what happens to us when we’ve spent a bit of time on this Earth? Perhaps somehow I’ve unwittingly become one of those survivors that simply exists for the sake of existence. Moving through life with only dimly lit dreams, goals and desires. Surely this cannot be the case?

I have passions. People enjoy the food I cook. When we are gathered around drinking great wines, I can tell great stories that capture attention and entertain. Are those qualities simply a front for an otherwise dull, limited existence that is doomed to reach the end of nowhere?
What’s holding me down? It has to be that I have refused to grasp what the Universe has to give me. That my clear and concise image for the future is more akin to peering through muddy waters. Intellectually I completely believe that what you see you can achieve. Obviously, my break down comes at the very forefront of that equation. I no longer see what it is that could be in my life.
Does it hurt you to read that last statement as much as it does me to type it out?
Refocusing on the clear mental image of my future must become my priority. Refining that image to a crystal-like clarity. Realizing that I have the mental and spiritual acumen to deal with the inevitable speed bumps that life has to offer. I don’t have to continue to have dialogs in my head in order to deal with those challenges, BEFORE they happen; if they happen.
Instead, focusing my energy on creating exactly what it is my life should be like. Where I want to be. With whom I want to be close to and spend time with. Worrying only where necessary and only as much as is required. The effects of my choices will sort themselves out. I know in my heart I am a good person, make appropriate choices in life, and would never knowingly take actions that would cause pain and suffering.
Well thought out plans are important. Understanding the rippling ramifications of various choices are just as important. Being smart enough to change direction when warranted, mandatory. Continuing to ultimately do nothing because of the variety of nonsensical excuses in my life must cease. Would you agree that they must not exist in your life either?
What is holding you down? Ultimately, I’ll bet your answer is in the same ballpark as mine. I and the few (smart 😉 ) friends of mine that read this site are very much interested in hearing your story. Feel free to leave a comment. Or if you have similar thoughts crafted out on your blog or website, drop your link in the comments section below and point us towards your insight.
I for one am very interested in learning more about where you are in your life; more importantly, where you would like to see yourself going!

Sony Vaio Z1VA Screen distortions

sony-vaioAnyone own or have any experience with Sony Vaio laptop model Z1VA? I’ve just relinquished my 17″ widescreen Acer Aspire 9500 to my Mom because her Vaio (which I gave her years ago) is having massive breakdown in the display. Will try and follow up here with a screen grab from that machine. Basically, there are a ton of vertical bluish specs of color that are mucking up the clarity of the display. Hoping to salvage the machine if at all possible.
Thanks in advance for anyone that could shed some light!

How to install a dishwasher

Before those dishes start washing themselves, in addition to the new appliance, you are going to need a few things: fittings, like properly sized brass elbows to connect the dishwasher inlet to the copper supply line as well as compression fittings for attaching the supply under the sink to the angle stop. Your home repair and maintenance tool box should always have some Teflon tape for wrapping the threads of water spigots and other threaded pipe ends.
Medium sized wire nuts are always good around the house, and probably come with the new appliance. You’ll want to have hose clamps for attaching the drain hose, and some plumbers strap to secure that hose.
A few simple tools and a couple of specialty items are all you’ll need to complete this install. Again, your repair tool box should have a variety of screwdrivers, pliers and an adjustable wrench. If you don’t have wire strippers, make the investment, you’ll thank me later!
A power cordless drill will make the job easier. You’ll need a 2 inch hole cutter as well. If using copper tubing, you’ll want to have bending springs and a tube cutter (close quarter is preferred). Rubber or plastic tubing? You should be fine without investing in the pipe tools.
Connect your water supply line to the angle stop, or the “faucet” under the sink. Run your supply through the cabinet wall hole you drill there. If your electrical is coming from under the sink, it’s advisable to run through it’s own hole.
With the 2 lines now into empty appliance cavity, measure how much line you’ll need to connect to the water inlet and the electrical connection box. Don’t hesitate to gently tip the dishwasher forward to gain better access to the bottom of the appliance. From this position you can ensure the inlet fitting and electrical connections are secured. If you’re using copper tubing, leave a few inches past the inlet location, use a curving spring to bend the tube to the fitting.
Open the electrical box and run in your 3 wires: white, black and green with about 3/8 of an inch stripped. Using wire nuts, connect the 3 feed wires to their corresponding appliance lines. Replace the metal box cover, and ensure you’ve affixed the electrical feed line to the back wall.
Attach the drain line at the dishwasher side; secure with a hose clamp. Snake this line through at least a 2 inch hole into the under sink area. Clamp the end of the drain line to the inlet of your garbage disposal, or the sink’s tail piece and be sure to tighten the hose clamp to prevent leakage of discarded dish water.
Push the dishwasher all the way until the closed front is flush with the other cabinet doors. Using a small “torpedo” style level, make sure the dishwasher is level by adjusting one or both of the feet in front (they usually screw up and down.) With the dishwasher in place and level, insert small screws into the built in tabs just under the counter creating a stable connection between the top of the dishwasher and the underside of the counter.
Turn on your water supplies and check fittings. Give them some time, as a build up in pressure sometimes works out leaks. When you are certain all is dry, plug in or make your electrical connection and run a test cycle. Continue to check your water feed and intakes as well as the drain hose clamps on the appliance and under your sink.
Finally, if your model has a kick plate, insert it into place, tighten the install screws, and enjoy your new dishwasher. Take pride in the expert installation job and be happy with your water and energy savings.

Considering "Becoming a Chef"

Becoming a Chef
Marlene gave me “The Flavor Bible” for my birthday (yesterday 😐 ) just before I left NYC on Tuesday the 28th. It is such an interesting compendium on flavor in food theory that I now want to learn more and have decided to get more of Karen Page and Andrew Dornenburg’s culinary books.
Will post a review after I receive and digest it (pun intended!)

Roast Duck Soup after a day at the library

Today I decided that I would scope out the nearest New York Public Library nypl_logo, which happened to be the really cool Jefferson Market Branch. I actually didn’t get much of a chance to walk around today, but tomorrow, I’m going to poke around the second floor tomorrow when I go back (I was working today in the basement.)
Other than free WiFi the best thing about being there today was the fact that I had nice desk surface and chair to work on, for the first time since I’ve been here in NYC. And until you have to work 8 to 12 hours a day with your laptop on only your lap you don’t really appreciate something as simple as a desk and chair.
On the walk home, I passed by Sammy’s Noodle House. And after finally figuring out where the “main entrance” was located, I went in and ordered Wonton Soup with duck, chow fun noodles, and, oh yeah, no wontons. Apparently, they make all the wontons in advance with both shrimp and pork. Considering that eating pork would send me straight to hell, I opted not to have them in in my dinner.
I had just enough time to send a couple of text messages to my Sister visiting my 94 (I think) year old Grandmother who had just come out to California to spend some time with her youngest son.
Well, I have to say, not only did my gigantic bowl of soup taste super yummy, it looked fantastic. And I was able to snag a really nice picture of it (with a nice little TsingTao product placement. Ooops 😉 ) Take a look and let me know how envious you are!

Qdoba food delivery in NYC

qdoba-food-order Since I’ve been in NYC this year, one of my favorite discoveries has been the newly launched Mexican grill, Qdoba. Marlene and I dined back in late January at store #550 located at 12 W. 23rd St. How the hell do I possibly know the date and exact address of the burrito shop that I had a quick dinner in over 2 months ago?
Great question!
Quick answer, Qdoba has a fantastic rewards program with a great tag line, “The more you eat, the more you earn”. LOL! I love that one, but not as much as the motto they have on posters in store, “Frequent biter miles”.
To the left, what you’re seeing is a copy of my order from today’s online experience requesting delivery from “my Qdoba” store. There’s actually one closer to where I’m staying on W. 12th St, however their delivery area doesn’t include this section of the City. No problems, however.
If you’d have seen the original order, you might have asked what army I was planning to feed, but I got a little greedy seeing all the control I had in the ordering process. Even what I did send through should be enough for about 3 meals, but that’s always a good thing 😉
With the order having been submitted, I did receive call from the restaurant rather quickly. My immediate thought was they were just confirming the order (ordering online has had that happen to me in the past.) Instead of confirmation, they apparently had to re-request my credit card number to get payment for the order.
Not a big deal. In fact, I even added an order of chips and guacamole to the delivery, so I guess I’ve got enough food for the next several days!
Now waiting for their maiden delivery. Oh, forgot to share that their online ordering system allows me to choose the time frame for delivery. And that was probably the weakest part of the process as I had to choose a new time frame since they were at “maximum order capacity” for the time I originally ordered.
And the only reason for that being the weakest point, is that I had to pull out my credit card and re-enter my card info. And that makes me think they are not saving my card info, which would make repeat orders much, much nicer. Not the end of the world, however.
Posting this up now, and will add comment updates to share the rest of the process in a bit. Bon apetit!

Jet lag, drug stores and fresh beets

Obviously, I’m going to have to do some amazing story telling in order to tie the words in that title together, yeah? No biggie. Here goes!
Some of my friends have been so very kind to inquire relating to what I lovingly refer to as the “+1 project”. We are starting the next phase this month, and that phase required my presence back here in NYC. With a Tuesday, 10am appointment for more testing (ART to be exact), I flew in on a red eye from PHX Monday night. Not sure why, but falling asleep Sunday night really didn’t occur until about 6am Monday morning.

Wishing now that I had spent the $200 to upgrade to first class when I had the chance because coach on most airlines just really sucks. Don’t get me wrong, I understand the product, and while I’m not an obese kind of guy, I am certain that I could lose a few pounds. Unfortunately, I’m not going to to shrink my 6’2″ frame anytime soon and sitting with people that take every opportunity to be the master of their domain can get tiring after a while.
Needless to say, that just gets old. And unless you get really sauced up, sleeping in that environment is just plain tough. Even after getting sauced up 😉
Fast forward a few days, and you find that I’m still challenged with the Arizona time zone clinging to my sleep habits. Or my waking habits to be more accurate. And another night of failing to fall asleep prior to 4am (1am back home). As challenging as it was, I forced myself awake and out of the West Village apartment by 10am. Just a note, the coffee at the corner deli is much better at 6:30am than it is at 10am. Everything bagels toast up nicely, however.

Leaving the deli at 14th and 8th, heading East I soon came across the Whole Foods located on Union Square. And that was a cool thing considering a tourist asked me if the direction we were heading would take her to the square. Being a man, I immediately said yes, and forged the path like a true townie. Pretty sure she thought I was a New Yorker. Silly, yeah, I know.
Given there are no really nice grocery stores in the Verde Valley where I live, a Trader Joes or a Whole Foods just sucks me into their doors. If you’ve never been at the Union Square Whole Toods be sure to go late on a Sunday afternoon. Not only will it blow your mind when that many folk are in a single store, you’ll be amazed at the staff’s efficiency for checking out the customers.
Even this morning, there were probably more people checking out than are ever in the stores back home. And you really have to love the little shopping cart escalator; which when you take down to the basement, you’re deposited into the amazing organic produce department.

And the first thing you see is a wall of fresh red and gold beets, in all their glory with stalks of green leafs. At $2.49 a pound, organic and as fresh as they seemed, you just cannot pass them by. And I didn’t! Cannot wait to clean them up, dice them, coat with olive oil, sea salt and fresh ground pepper and bake for 30 to 40 minutes. If you’ve never had fresh beets prepared this way, do yourself a favor and give it a try. You will be amazingly, uhm, amazed! 🙂
While it’s only .8 of a mile to the store, I’m thinking Google’s estimate of 3 minutes to make that walk is a bit short. Regardless of how long it takes in reality, I can attest to the fact there are probably more drugstores and Starbucks along that strip of 14th than in the entire state of Arizona.
Needing some razor blades, I opted to hit the Rite Aid at 14th and 7th, navigated the maze of aisles and finally found a piss poorly stocked shelf that ultimately had no blades for my shaving system. I guess the blades are high theft items because they are kept inside clear plastic shelf boxes that when you open the lid, an alarm goes off. WTF? Are you kidding me? I kept looking around to see if the security guard was going to come and dump out my organic beets to see if I was stuffing razor blades in my Whole Foods Bags. Ugh.
After checking what little offerings they had I realized I’d have to go across the street to the Duane Reade. Unfortunately, I picked up the wrong blades, so it’ll be another day or so before I get to shave the scruff off my face. But that’s cool; don’t really enjoy that chore anyway!
Okay, guessing I’d better get to work and finish up the projects I’m currently on. Feeling good that I was able to get myself up “early” and hopefully, I’ll be able to find the East Coast sleep vibe soon.
Have a great one!

Nearest cup of coffee

Thought I’d check out the Starbucks iGoogle gadget to see where the nearest shop to me here in the West Village was located. Of course, I knew where the nearest one would be, and the next nearest, and the next two. What I didn’t expect was this:
starbucks-near-me
Trust me when I tell you the island of Manhattan is underneath that sea of Starbucks! Really!
