Do you follow Seth Godin? Well, if you eat, breathe and otherwise live to learn more about how to be a better online (and offline) marketer, you definitely know this man. You’ve probably even read a book or two of his. I have. Plus, Seth’s personal blog delivers daily chunks of wisdom that keeps my mind churning until the next little kernel of wisdom shows up in my reader.
Well, in case you’ve not heard, Mr. Godin has decided that he has quite the alternative to the traditional MBA program. There are some, well, minor differences. Your garden variety MBA program can take a couple of years and could set you back as much as $150K. But don’t worry, once you “earn” that degree, if you’re lucky you might get a few thousand bucks bump in pay.
From his post entitled, “If you could change your life…would you?” Seth lays out an offering that should get you shaking in your seat. And if it doesn’t, please lean close to your monitor to see if it fogs up!
Seth Godin is
“…offering an apprenticeship/not-internship/graduate school/charm school track-changing opportunity to a few people this winter. It’s free, it’s fairly audacious and I hope you’ll check it out. It might not be for you (in fact, it probably isn’t) but I have no doubt that you know people who might be interested.”
This all comes at a time when I find myself at a cross roads. So many of us are clinging to what little bits of security we may have in our lives (I am no different!) Some of my good friends and I have been kicking around thoughts, concepts ideas and game changers looking for a game. 
As ‘08 closes, there have been a number of self imposed deadlines. The new year forces me to make hard choices. Seth’s offering is one welcome choice I did not expect.
In a nutshell, he is offering a six month, apprenticeship to work very closely with him and a small band of other creative, world changing folks that are fortunate enough to make the cut and be invited to this program. Your author would very much like to be a member of that group for all the obvious reasons, and for some that may be less clear. When you struggle to sift through the myriad of opportunities available to you, struggle to choose something that holds your heart, your passion, your desire, I have found that struggling, over time, leads to wasted opportunities.
By not making a choice to follow something, clearly you make a choice to not follow anything. It has taken years for that concept to sink in. Too many years. 2009 had already called me, asking me to consider making a choice, and has delighted me with several spicy options. Now as this project of Seth’s kicks off, you will see me embark upon a journey. One that could end just as quickly as it begins.
Or perhaps, regardless of whether James D Kirk is invited into Seth Godin’s apprenticeship program, the journey will open doors and lead me upon a path to strange new worlds and new civilizations (apologies, just couldn’t resist the reference!)
