Election 2008, the eve of history
Thought I’d weigh in, albeit briefly, regarding the upcoming elections. While I’ve been voting since turning 18 years of age (yeah, a long time, so?) the one consistent and disturbing trend I’ve personally noticed is just how increasingly vile the negative attack campaigning has become.
My first voting opportunity was back in the Fall of 1984. Couldn’t even begin to tell you who was running or what the measures were about, etc. I do remember that I had just gotten to U.C. Berkeley, was living in a Fraternity and soaking in all that was the East Bay at that time (trust me, there was, and still is a LOT to soak in! ) If I’m not mistaken, I was a registered Republican for that and several ensuing election cycles.
In fact, I believe I remained a registered Republican until I was recruited to do some party work while living in San Diego (the first time) in 1996. After that experience, however, upon my next move (yes, if you know me, you know the phrase “next move” has been issued A LOT in my time!) I registered Independent.
While I’ve remained a hard core Independent (I have no earthly clue what the heck that means ), I can tell you that as the years move on, I’ve tended to vote increasingly democrat. Likely, the on going guilt associated with voting for the first GB (the first time only, and only cause I had voted for Regan before that) is what started me leaning away from the GOP. Now, while still an active Independent voter, and while living in Arizona, I find myself leaning, nay, falling over the fence onto that bright green, lush and inviting Democrat lawn (I will be SO disappointed should that grass wither and die over the next four years.)
So, as we all anxiously await the (good) outcome we’re hoping for, take note that regardless of your positions or whom you’re pulling for, this is truly a unique time in the history of this country, if not the world. Are you thinking like I’m thinking, that this will be a prime time to simply come together, make the best with the most support, and see just how great America can be to both its own people and to the peoples of the world?
Can you just see it?!
