OpenAds post for Ad in feed footer

It has been a long, long time since I’ve actually seen OpenAds, the free, open source ad server OpenAds actually work (for me, anyways). Joseph had it functional about a year ago when we were still using its predecessor, phpAdsNew.

The bg server has probably seen no less than 4 installs of OpenAds since it took over. I won’t speak for my friend, Joe, but I know I have personally been extremely agitated in my attempts in the past to make it do what it is supposed to do. And that is to take nothing away from the software nor the community supporting it. More than likely, we were unable to get it to work because of all the other experimental stuff we do on our own server box. That’s cool, right? No reason to rail against the system, if we are maligning our portion of it.

As you’ll see on the site now, the banners at the bottom of the pages are currently being served out via our OpenAds install. With this post, I’m attempting to inject a banner into the footer of our RSS feeds (and according to whatever campaign we are employing within that “zone”.)

Will keep you informed!

  • No, please. You have nothing to be sorry about. OpenAds is clearly a complex and powerful piece of software. If I could pass on anything to new folks using the program, that would be to maintain diligence. Work through the online manuals, realizing that the software is growing a bit faster than the documentation can keep up with it. For instance, if you see a reference to version 2.3 and you are using 2.4, don't damn it all to hell and start deleting (I speak from past experience ;) )

The other bit of user advice I would share is to do the absolute easiest install of an advertiser and banner campaign, and a publisher and zone. Once you are set up with that, and you realize your install works (again, this has not been the case for me in the past :'( ) you can really start flexing your muscles. And keep using it! Create new banner insertions, put the code into your theme, add more campaigns till you really have a feel for the process. Then you'll get that "aha" moment, and OpenAds will be old hat and you'll wonder (as I am today) how I ever lived without it.

Arlen, I have been using a plugin that allows me access to the footers of the RSS feeds. I will follow your link however if it gives me the knowledge to be able to do the same with out having yet another WP plugin (think I'm up to like 48 installed/activated plugins! I know "insane"!)

Thanks for taking the time to drop by and comment for us. It is greatly appreciated!
